The photo, generously shared by a reader residing in Tokyo with The Asahi Shimbun, depicts Hachiko, born in 1923, during his later years. This iconic dog became a symbol of loyalty after faithfully waiting for his owner’s return at JR Shibuya Station in Tokyo for nearly a decade following his owner’s passing.
Imprinted in memory, Hachiko’s likeness is immortalized in a bronze statue adorning the vicinity of Shibuya Station in the capital’s Shibuya Ward.
In this newfound photo, Hachiko’s trademark droopy ears are unmistakable as he is pictured alongside the reader’s father, offering a glimpse into the dog’s final years. A curator familiar with Hachiko, known affectionately as Hachi, remarked on the rarity of the image, emphasizing its significance.
The photograph was shared by Kenji Gomi, now 91, from Akiruno in western Tokyo. Gomi’s father, Kasaburo, served as a worker at Shibuya Station during the years 1933 to 1935, coinciding with Hachiko’s final years before his passing in 1935.
This poignant snapshot captures Kasaburo, donned in his station worker attire, tenderly feeding Hachiko as the loyal dog raises his paw in response. Hachiko’s advanced age is evident, with his drooping ears serving as a poignant reminder of the passage of time.
Keita Matsui, a curator at the Shibuya Folk and Literary Shirane Memorial Museum, provided insight into the photo’s probable timeframe, estimating it to be between 1934 and 1935 based on the characteristics of Hachiko’s collar. Matsui noted the exceptional nature of the image, particularly in showcasing Hachiko’s collar and left shoulder.
Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Hachiko’s residency in the Shibuya district, Matsui expressed surprise and delight at the discovery of this new photo, underscoring the enduring adoration for Hachiko across generations.
Reflecting on his decision to share the photo, Gomi expressed sentimentality, describing it as a cherished memento from his father. He expressed hope that others would find joy in glimpsing this intimate portrayal of Hachiko’s later years, a testament to the enduring legacy of loyalty and companionship embodied by the beloved canine.
