A couple’s quest for a new furry family member took an unexpected turn when social media connected them with a dog rescue organization specializing in bringing dogs from South Korea to the United States. Now, their latest addition is enjoying the good life on their Nebraska ranch.
Elle Worley shared with Newsweek the emotional journey she and her husband embarked on after the loss of their beloved dog Willow in November 2023, followed by their other dog Copper falling ill. The couple, initially uncertain about adding another dog to their family, eventually decided that another golden retriever would be a fitting tribute to Willow and a comforting companion for Copper. However, the adoption process proved to be challenging, with unanswered applications, geographical limitations, and fencing requirements posing obstacles.
Their luck changed when Worley stumbled upon a Facebook post from a golden retriever rescue group featuring Penny, a dog residing in a South Korean kill shelter. Moved by Penny’s story, the couple wasted no time in submitting an adoption application. Thanks to The Barky Bunch Rescue, the adoption process was smooth, affordable, and facilitated the journey of Penny from Seoul to Washington, D.C., where the couple met her and brought her back to their ranch in Nebraska.
While initially cautious around Copper, Penny quickly warmed up to him, and within weeks, they became inseparable companions, bringing immense joy to the Worleys. Despite enduring hardships in her past, including significant weight loss and surgery for entropion on her eyelids, Penny has adapted well to her new life. Worley revealed that Penny recently underwent successful surgery to remove a stage 1 mast cell tumor and is now enjoying her newfound happiness on the ranch, relishing in activities like running in the pastures, playing in the creek, and interacting with other animals.
Reflecting on Penny’s journey and transformation, Worley expressed gratitude for the love and joy Penny has brought into their lives, describing her as an affectionate and cherished member of their family.
