Dog Owners Warned About Heat Risks Amid UK Heatwave

by Lisa

The Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) has issued a crucial warning to dog owners as a significant heatwave grips much of the UK. The charity cautions against leaving pets in vehicles and walking dogs during peak heat hours to prevent serious health risks.

With soaring temperatures, GSPCA anticipates an increase in reports related to dogs confined in cars, animals walked on scalding pavements, and pets exposed to intense sunlight. The charity’s manager, Steve Byrne, emphasizes the need for simple precautions to safeguard pets in these conditions.

Byrne advises that dog owners avoid walking their pets during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, he suggests checking pavement temperatures by placing the back of a hand on it for seven seconds. Ideally, dogs should be exercised on cooler grass, preferably in shaded areas, either early in the morning or later in the evening.

“We urge pet owners to pause and consider the safety of their animals to prevent life-threatening situations,” Byrne stated. “Leaving a dog in a car, even in the shade, poses a severe risk of heat exhaustion as the sun shifts, which can be fatal.”

The GSPCA notes that when outdoor temperatures reach 22°C (72°F), internal car temperatures can climb to a dangerous 47°C (117°F) within an hour. Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs include heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, and impaired coordination. In such cases, it is critical to contact a veterinarian immediately to gradually reduce the dog’s body temperature.

Lorna Chadwick, GSPCA’s animal welfare manager, added, “We are committed to preventing harm to animals due to extreme heat. If you encounter a dog in a hot vehicle or any animal at risk, please contact us at 01481 25726.”

This urgent advisory highlights the importance of keeping pets safe during extreme weather conditions, ensuring their well-being throughout the summer heat.
