Frankenmuth Oktoberfest Welcomes Wiener Dogs for Annual Race

by Lisa

The charming town of Frankenmuth celebrated its 34th Oktoberfest this past Saturday, September 21, with a delightful highlight: the Wiener Dog Races. The event, a beloved fixture of the festival, drew hundreds of dachshund enthusiasts to the Harvey Kern Pavilion, where their furry companions competed in a series of whimsical races.

Registration for the highly anticipated races began on May 1 and was capped at 100 entries. The day kicked off with the Parade of Wieners, a colorful procession featuring dachshunds decked out in everything from traditional German garb to inventive costumes.

Participants vied for various accolades, including trophies for the best-dressed dog, smallest and fattest dachshund, and the king and queen of wieners, honored for their traditional attire.

The racing event itself comprised 12 preliminary heats, leading to a final showdown where the top contenders competed for the grand prize. The champion of the races was awarded an overnight stay at Splash Village and a $50 prize.

Among the competitors was Luna, a two-year-old from Farmington Hills, who secured a commendable second place. Luna, who won her heat last year but did not place in the final, has previously triumphed at the Farmington Founders Festival Wiener Dog Race. Her owner, Michael Heidner, expressed his satisfaction with the result, noting their plans to return next year for another shot at victory.
