The remarkable tale unfolded last October in Bonfield, near North Bay, and has earned Bear a place in the 2024 Purina Animal Hall of Fame.
The Life-Saving Actions
The incident began on a quiet night when Bear’s owner, Janice, was jolted awake by the dog’s urgent behavior. Bear jumped on Janice and howled loudly, prompting her to investigate the cause of his distress. She discovered her husband, Darren, a Canadian Armed Forces veteran, unconscious on the family room floor.
Bear’s persistent jumping on Darren’s chest was a critical factor in keeping him alive. The technique, which closely resembles chest compressions used in CPR, kept Darren’s blood circulating until paramedics arrived. By the time Janice called for help, Darren had been unconscious for about three hours.
Medical Insights
Doctors at the hospital identified that Darren had suffered a ‘widowmaker’ heart attack, a severe and often fatal type of heart attack. The continuous jumping by Bear effectively performed a form of CPR, which proved crucial in sustaining Darren’s life until medical professionals could take over.
Recognition and Celebration
Bear, whose lineage includes two former service dogs, has been a faithful companion to Darren. The family now regards Bear as their “furry hero” and a testament to the profound bond between humans and their pets.
