The Unbreakable Bond: Why My Dog Is My Best Friend

by Lisa

I was just eight years old when I met my best friend, a moment that would forever change my life. It was an ordinary day after school, and as I returned home from third grade, I was greeted by a tiny bundle of joy—and a hint of sleepiness. I have always been drawn to dogs, and when my parents told me I could choose any dog I wanted, I immediately knew I wanted a golden retriever. I envisioned a playful companion who would run, swim, and cuddle with me endlessly.

After some searching, we found our dream dog. All he needed now was the perfect name. My sister and I, both big movie fans, decided to name him after our favorite film series: Indiana Jones, or Indy for short.

From that first fateful encounter, I knew Indy and I were destined to be best friends. Every day after school, we would embark on walks to our favorite park, followed by relaxing afternoons in our backyard. We grew up side by side; he witnessed my transition from childhood to adulthood, standing by me through every significant moment in my life. Whether it was the excitement of a first day of school, the uncertainty of lockdown, my high school graduation, or sending me off to college, Indy was always there, unwavering and loyal.

Indy became my confidant, the one I turned to when I needed someone to talk to. He was an exceptional listener, offering comfort without judgment. Although he preferred to sleep outside my door rather than on my bed, his nightly vigil reassured me that he would be there when I woke up to start another day together.

As Indy has aged, our routines have evolved. Our walks have shortened, and our energetic playtime has lessened, but the love and friendship we share remain as strong as ever. This December, he will celebrate his 13th birthday. While I often feel a pang of sadness at the thought of him growing older and the prospect of spending less time together, I cherish every moment we have. I know that when we are together, it will feel as if no time has passed at all, reinforcing the unbreakable bond between a dog and his best friend.
