The Tauranga Kennel Association is set to welcome dog lovers and enthusiasts to the All Breeds Dog Championship in Katikati this Labour weekend, featuring an impressive lineup of approximately 500 pedigree dogs.
This year’s event promises to be a spectacular showcase, with two shows combined into one. The festivities kick off with an opening ceremony at 8:30 AM on Saturday, featuring a traditional cultural welcome for international judges from Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, and Australia, as well as exhibitors from across the country.
Following the opening, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI)—the world’s largest canine organization—will commence at 8:45 AM. The first of the Tauranga Kennel Association’s shows will start at 12:30 PM, with additional events scheduled for Sunday.
According to Michele Reichmuth, the association’s secretary, the event garners enthusiastic participation from dog show owners and aficionados nationwide.
Admission to the championship is free, offering a unique opportunity for the public to engage with breeders and enjoy a day dedicated to dog appreciation.
“The show is a gathering point for everyone passionate about dog breeding and exhibiting,” Reichmuth noted. “It’s a fun-filled experience for dog lovers to watch the competitions. Visitors can learn about various breeds and meet breeders, making it a perfect venue for those interested in encountering rare and unique breeds.”
Among the highlights of the two-day event will be rare breeds such as the Skye Terrier, Italian Spinone, Swedish Vallhund, and Portuguese Water Dog.
The championship features seven show categories, including Toy Dogs, Gun Dogs, Terriers, Hounds, Working, Non-Sporting, and Utility, alongside the coveted Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show awards.
The event is being held in collaboration with several clubs, including the Bay of Plenty Gundog Club, Asian Breeds Club, Central Island Toy Club, and The Terrier Club. Attendees can also enjoy pet-related stalls and a selection of food trucks on-site, adding to the community atmosphere of this much-anticipated dog show.
