In a heartwarming rescue, a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix named Dorothea was saved after being discovered clinging to a submerged shopping cart in an Arizona canal. The dramatic scene unfolded in June when concerned bystanders spotted the senior dog struggling in the water in Phoenix.
Dorothea was seen resting her head on the shopping cart, which had partially sunk and become overgrown with vegetation. Alarmed by her predicament, a Good Samaritan contacted the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) for assistance. Emergency Animal Medical Technician Hunter Stribling quickly responded to the scene, accompanied by the Phoenix Fire Department.
As worries about Dorothea’s survival grew, rescuers devised a plan. They used a ladder to enter the canal and skillfully lassoed the frightened dog with an animal control pole, carefully pulling her to safety. According to AHS, Dorothea was startled but wagged her tail joyfully upon reaching dry land.
The circumstances surrounding her presence in the canal remain unclear, and it is uncertain how long she had been there. Upon assessment by the AHS Pet Ambulance team, Dorothea was found to be dehydrated, hungry, and infested with ticks, with an overall unpleasant odor from the canal water.
Following her rescue, Dorothea was taken to AHS’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, where she received a thorough examination. While she had some minor injuries and dental issues, her health was generally good. After undergoing dental care for a few fractured teeth, the senior dog spent about a month at the AHS shelter, where she received medical treatment, a spa day, and the opportunity to showcase her sweet, affectionate personality.
It didn’t take long for Dorothea to charm potential adopters, and she soon found her forever home with a loving family in Youngtown, Arizona. According to AHS, the organization rescues and cares for over 22,000 animals each year, with Dorothea’s story being one of resilience and survival.
