Ensuring Pet Safety This Halloween: Expert Tips from a Dog Trainer

by Lisa

As Halloween approaches, pet experts are sounding the alarm about potential hazards that could threaten the safety of our furry companions. The excitement surrounding treats, decorations, and festive costumes can inadvertently put pets at risk during this spooky season.

Annie-Mae Levy, a dog training specialist from the Woofz app, emphasizes that Halloween can present numerous temptations for dogs. “Many dogs will eat just about anything, and Halloween offers an abundance of enticing treats—candles, decorations, costumes, and endless piles of candy,” Levy warns. “However, the wrong snack can quickly turn a fun evening into a stressful trip to the vet.”

One of the primary concerns is chocolate, a common Halloween treat that can be fatal to dogs. Even small amounts can lead to serious health issues, including breathing difficulties, seizures, and gastrointestinal distress. Levy advises dog owners to keep chocolate well out of reach and to educate children about the dangers of sharing treats with pets. Close supervision during trick-or-treating is also crucial.

Beyond chocolate, there are other candy-related dangers. Levy highlights the risks of sugar-free candies, which often contain xylitol, a sweetener that can be extremely harmful to dogs. “Even a small amount of xylitol can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar levels, leading to lethargy, instability, seizures, and even death,” she cautions. To minimize risk, pet owners should check ingredient labels, store harmful treats securely, and remind family members to be vigilant.

Home décor can also pose hazards. Decorative corn, while festive, can become a choking hazard for pets and, if ingested, can lead to intestinal blockages. Additionally, scented candles can irritate dogs’ respiratory systems, and open flames present a fire risk, especially with energetic pets around.

Levy also advises against using fake spider webs, which can entangle pets and potentially be ingested. “Artificial fibers aren’t easily digested, leading to serious intestinal blockages,” she warns. Instead, opt for safer paper decorations to keep the atmosphere festive without endangering pets.

Glow sticks, often seen as harmless Halloween accessories, can also create problems for dogs. While typically non-toxic, chewing on glow sticks can result in drooling, vomiting, and irritation of the mouth and stomach. To prevent any accidents, it’s best to keep these items out of your pet’s reach.

By following these simple guidelines, dog owners can ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for both their pets and their families.
