A trip to Disney is a dream come true for many, but for Maverick, a Golden Retriever service dog, it was an opportunity to meet his hero—Pluto, Mickey Mouse’s iconic canine companion. The heartwarming encounter took place at a Disney park, where Maverick’s day was filled with joy, including a special plushie of Pluto, before the big meet-and-greet with the real deal.
In a viral video shared on social media, Maverick, wearing his service dog vest, shows off his excitement as he gets closer to Pluto. “Look at those wiggles,” Maverick’s mom remarks as the dog’s enthusiasm grows with every step toward the beloved character.
Though Maverick initially seemed a little apprehensive about meeting the towering, costumed Pluto, his nerves quickly eased. It’s common for service dogs to experience anxiety around unusual figures like large costumes, but Maverick soon found his courage. Pluto, recognizing Maverick’s hesitation, knelt down to the dog’s level, making the experience even more special for the service dog and his family.
The touching moment was captured in photographs that Maverick’s family says they will cherish forever. “It’s lovely seeing Pluto from Maverick’s perspective,” one viewer commented, capturing the sentiment of many who watched the video.
Though Pluto may look strikingly similar to Maverick with his golden fur, he is, in fact, a mixed-breed dog originally envisioned as a Bloodhound. Pluto’s short fur, floppy ears, and distinctive black snout all resemble a Bloodhound’s features. When he first appeared on screen, Pluto was unnamed, later becoming Mickey Mouse’s faithful companion.
For Maverick, the trip was a magical moment—a chance not only to assist his person but to meet the dog who inspired him. As it turns out, even a service dog needs a hero.
