Three once-abandoned puppies have transformed into qualified police dogs after intensive training with Durham Constabulary.
The young canines, Jasper, Dutch, and Axel, aged between 14 and 18 months, recently completed a rigorous 10-week training program under the guidance of the force’s Dog Support Unit. Once stray animals, they are now officially registered as police dogs.
The trio includes two Belgian Malinois, also known as Belgian Shepherds, and one Alsatian, a breed commonly referred to as a German Shepherd.
From Stray to Specialized
Jasper, an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois, was found in distressing conditions last summer. At just seven weeks old, he had been abandoned in a sweltering greenhouse in Manchester. The woman who rescued him noticed his potential and enrolled him in the police puppy development program in April. Jasper is now partnered with PC Dan Cuthbertson, specializing in general-purpose policing.
Axel, another Belgian Malinois, had a similarly difficult start. He was abandoned in a cardboard box outside a Salvation Army shop in Darlington at just 12 weeks old. After being taken in by a local vet and later adopted, Axel’s mischievous energy and strong character caught the attention of the Dog Support Unit. Now 14 months old, Axel has joined PC Paul Cooper and is officially the youngest licensed police dog in the force.
Dutch, the third member of the group, is an Alsatian with a blonde coat, distinguishing him from the Malinois. Given to police officers two months ago, Dutch has already proved his abilities. He will work alongside PC Laura Linskey, focusing on suspect apprehension and locating missing persons.
A Bright Future
“All three hit the ground running,” said a police spokesperson. “They excelled in the intensive training program and passed their final assessments with flying colors.”
Now fully qualified, the dogs are ready to serve and protect their communities. The force has extended its congratulations and wished the new recruits success in their vital roles.
