The 2024 National Dog Show captivated audiences with its array of impressive canine competitors, but it was Vito, a charming pug, who stole the spotlight, clinching the prestigious title of Best in Show. Held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, the event featured over 205 breeds and drew in dog lovers from across the nation. Vito’s victory marked the first time since 2004 that a pug claimed the top honor, making his win especially significant for fans of the breed.
Vito, a 2.5-year-old pug with “sympathetic eyes and a muscly stature,” faced stiff competition, defeating more than 2,000 dogs to take home the crown. His co-owner, Carolyn Koch from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, expressed her pride, saying, “I’m so proud of Vito. He has worked incredibly hard and deserves this recognition.” Vito’s triumph was determined by judges evaluating not only appearance and temperament but also how well each dog conformed to the breed’s standards.
In the final round, Vito went head-to-head with a stellar group of contenders, including Verde, the Welsh terrier, who took second place, and other top dogs such as a giant schnauzer, a Clumber spaniel, and an Ibizan hound. Ultimately, it was Vito’s balanced qualities that secured the victory. In addition to the prestige, Vito’s owners received a $2,000 cash prize, likely to be spent on treats and toys for their beloved pug.
This year’s National Dog Show also featured other memorable moments, including the performance of Carrie Klaiber, a Kane Area High School alumna, who showcased the Grand Champion Windward’s ‘Phil,’ a 13-month-old mastiff. Klaiber, whose passion for dog showing was evident, skillfully guided the massive breed through the course, impressing both the judges and the audience with her expertise.
The National Dog Show, which airs on NBC every Thanksgiving, is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of the bond between dogs and their owners. The event not only highlights the beauty and agility of various breeds but also promotes responsible dog ownership and breeding practices, supported by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Spectators were treated to a visual feast of graceful tails and playful barks, all while sharing in the camaraderie and excitement of the dog-loving community.
Vito’s win has sparked enthusiasm among pug enthusiasts and may inspire more pug owners to enter the world of competitive dog shows. The pug breed, known for its endearing personality and distinctive look, has garnered widespread affection, and Vito’s success could lead to a new wave of interest in both adoption and competition.
While Vito’s victory was the highlight, the National Dog Show ultimately reminds everyone of the deep connection between humans and their canine companions. From the joy of winning to the spirit of friendly competition, the event brings families together to celebrate the loyalty, beauty, and personality of our furry friends, creating memories that last long after the final bow.
