Dudley Zoo has invited visitors to take part in a unique naming process for its first-ever litter of bush dog puppies, born earlier this year. After initially asking for suggestions for just one puppy, the zoo was so overwhelmed by the response that it decided to extend the opportunity to name all four of the puppies.
The pups, which are native to South America, have now been named Diego, Pablo, Bruno, and Carlos, following a popular naming campaign. The zoo’s first bush dog litter was born in late August to parents Twenké and Dora, who were paired as part of an international breeding program aimed at preserving the species.
Bush dogs are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss in their native regions, and Dudley Zoo’s breeding success is seen as an important step in supporting conservation efforts for the species. The puppies remained in their dens during their first weeks, slowly emerging as they grew more confident. Since then, they have become a favourite among zoo visitors.
This birth marks a significant achievement for Dudley Zoo, which celebrated the arrival of the pups in October as they began to explore their surroundings. The zoo’s success with the bush dogs follows similar efforts at other wildlife institutions, such as Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which also welcomed a litter earlier this year.
The zoo’s bush dog programme underscores ongoing efforts to protect this elusive species, and the birth of the puppies has been celebrated as a conservation milestone.
