Murraylands Animal Welfare Watch is calling on pet owners to reconsider the practice of keeping dogs outside, especially during the holiday season.
In a statement released ahead of Christmas, the organization emphasized the importance of treating pets as family members, highlighting the physical and emotional toll that keeping dogs outdoors can take on them. Despite the ongoing advocacy from animal welfare groups, the myth of the “outside dog” remains prevalent, with many dogs still confined to backyards or chained up for long periods.
“Dogs are social creatures, and keeping them isolated outside deprives them of essential companionship and mental stimulation,” the group explained. “This practice not only leads to loneliness and frustration but also undermines the fundamental well-being of the animal.”
Dogs, descendants of pack animals, thrive in environments where they are part of a family unit. Their needs extend far beyond just food and shelter; they also require emotional connection and social interaction. When kept outdoors, especially in extreme weather conditions, dogs can suffer both physically and mentally.
Animal welfare advocates stress that dogs living outdoors are exposed to a variety of dangers, including extreme temperatures, storms, and loud noises like fireworks. In addition, prolonged exposure to the elements can lead to conditions like hypothermia or heatstroke, making it crucial for owners to bring their pets inside during harsh weather.
The group acknowledged that some dogs, particularly in rural areas, might prefer to spend time outdoors. However, they emphasized that no dog should be left outside for long periods without the opportunity to be with their family, particularly during the holiday season when companionship and warmth are at their peak.
“Bring your dog inside to experience the holiday joy with you,” the statement concluded. “Dogs will only feel content outside if you’re out there with them.”
This holiday season, Murraylands Animal Welfare Watch urges pet owners to rethink their approach to pet care and offer their furry companions the comfort and security of home.
