Dachshund Charity Tea Party Raises Funds for Rescue Efforts

by Lisa

Dachshunds and their owners gathered for a festive tea party at Shurdington Community Centre on Sunday, all in the name of charity. The event, organized by the Dog Meat Trade Dachshund Rescue and Support Group, provided an opportunity for dogs and their families to come together and unwind after a year of advocacy work.

The charity, which focuses on rescuing dachshunds from the dog meat trade in Asia, uses events like these to raise crucial funds for their operations. “It’s just a chance for everyone to gather, enjoy some festive fun, and let the dogs play,” explained George Porter from the rescue group. The event was held to “regroup after a year of campaigning” and to raise awareness of the group’s mission to save dachshunds destined for the meat market.

The tea party featured an array of homemade cakes, biscuits, and sandwiches, with the highlight being the dachshunds themselves, many of which wore festive costumes, including jumpers and antler headbands. Guests enjoyed the sight of these furry friends relaxing with their owners in the festive setting.

Founded in 2020, the charity has rescued over 250 dachshunds, many of which have endured the harsh realities of the dog meat trade and breeding farms. The rescue effort, however, comes with significant costs. Porter highlighted that it costs around £5,000 to transport a dog from Asia to the UK, with additional costs for necessary vaccinations, vet checks, and a mandatory quarantine period. The total cost per rescue can reach up to £15,000.

Despite the challenges, the group continues its work with enthusiasm, having rescued 67 dogs since last year’s tea party alone. More than 30 dachshunds are currently awaiting rescue from Asia, with ongoing events across the country helping to fund these efforts. “Every penny raised here goes directly to saving dachshunds,” said Dottie, a regular supporter of the charity who brought her dog, Dot Dot, to the event. “Our motto is ‘No dachshund left behind,’ and we will save as many as we can.”

The charity’s dedication to the cause remains unwavering as it strives to make a difference in the lives of dachshunds facing unimaginable hardship. The tea party not only provided a chance for people to connect but also underscored the importance of community involvement in rescuing these lovable dogs from dangerous fates.
