Pet owners are being urged to reconsider a popular dog treat given to many pets during the holiday season. A recent survey found that nearly a quarter of dog owners plan to share festive treats with their pets, but a staggering 79% are unaware of the potential dangers these snacks may pose.
Richard Green, a pet food supplier at Kennedy Wild Bird Food & Pet Supplies, has issued a stark warning about the risks of rawhide chews, which are often marketed as a natural and safe option for dogs. Green points out that rawhide treats undergo a production process involving harsh chemicals, including toxic preservatives and bleach, which can be harmful to a dog’s health.
“While rawhide may seem like a harmless chew, the chemicals used in its production can lead to serious health issues,” Green explained. “These treats are not regulated as food products in the UK, meaning there is no guarantee they are free from dangerous substances.”
In addition to chemical risks, rawhide poses physical hazards. The treat can splinter, increasing the risk of mouth injuries or digestive system damage. Rawhide can also expand in size when swallowed, leading to potentially life-threatening blockages in the intestines. Dogs who swallow large pieces may experience severe digestive issues, while fractures to teeth are also a common concern, especially for younger dogs whose teeth are still developing.
