A rescue dog named Laney, who was found abandoned in the desert, has become an unlikely holiday sensation. Her journey from being homeless in Palm Springs to becoming a viral Christmas performer with her adoptive mom, Mary Ransom, has captured the hearts of millions.
The story began in April 2020, when a couple’s car encountered a small dog running across the road. The dog had been living alone in the desert and appeared to be in need of a home. After taking her to the vet, the couple arranged a meeting in a parking lot to meet Laney. “It was truly love at first sight,” Ransom recalls. “We immediately connected and have been inseparable ever since.”
Soon after, Ransom discovered Laney’s surprising talent for singing. While singing “Happy Birthday” to one of her grandkids, Laney insisted on joining in, and it became clear that she loved to perform. Ransom, who is a grief therapist, quickly saw an opportunity to make the most of her dog’s newfound passion. With the pandemic isolating families, Ransom decided to create a special holiday video to share with loved ones.
“I wanted to bring a little happiness, especially during such a tough time,” Ransom explained. “A regular card just didn’t seem enough. And since Laney was the newest addition to our family, I thought a holiday video of us singing together would be the perfect way to spread some cheer.”
In December 2020, Ransom and Laney recorded their first Christmas video, with the dog enthusiastically joining in the singing. Ransom and Laney wore festive attire, and the video served as a heartwarming holiday greeting for their friends and family.
Each year since, Ransom and Laney have continued the tradition, recording a new video to share with loved ones. The pair always dress up for their performances, and Laney’s excitement is palpable. “She takes it very seriously and loves singing with her mama,” Ransom says. “After every video, she gets the zoomies around the house with a huge smile on her face. She knows she’s spreading joy.”
This year, someone shared their holiday video on TikTok, and it quickly went viral, bringing the duo’s heartwarming tradition to an international audience. “I never expected something like this,” Ransom admits. “It’s been overwhelming in the best way. The response has been incredible, and I’m just so glad we can bring some joy to people during the holidays.”
Laney’s rise to fame is a testament to the power of joy and connection, proving that even a small rescue dog can make a big impact. From being abandoned in the desert to serenading millions, Laney’s holiday spirit is something to be celebrated—both online and off.
