Essential Beach Guidelines for Dogs This Summer in Warrnambool

by Lisa

As the summer holidays approach, Warrnambool dog owners are urged to familiarize themselves with the local regulations regarding on-lead and off-lead areas, as well as beach restrictions. These rules, designed to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for both pets and the public, include seasonal restrictions in effect from December through March.

To assist visitors, the Warrnambool City Council has created a user-friendly, color-coded map outlining these restrictions.

Warrnambool’s Deputy Mayor and dog owner, Cr Vicki Jellie, emphasized the importance of following these regulations to ensure that both dogs and people can enjoy the region’s open spaces responsibly.

“Warrnambool is an ideal place for dog owners, offering plenty of opportunities to get out and about with your dog. But it’s crucial to adhere to the rules to ensure everyone’s comfort,” said Cr Jellie. “Moyjil is a great off-lead area where your dog can have a run, and there are other designated spaces across the city. The Council website clearly marks these areas.”

While dogs are beloved companions for many, Cr Jellie reminded residents to be considerate of others in public spaces.

“Not everyone is comfortable around dogs. Some people may have a fear of them, so it’s essential to respect their space and ensure we do the right thing,” she said. “And always remember to clean up after your dog, wherever you are in the city.”

Cr Jellie also highlighted the health and wellbeing benefits of owning a dog, noting that it encourages outdoor activity, boosts mental health, and strengthens the bond between pet and owner.

“Having a dog in Warrnambool is a wonderful experience. It gets you active, improves your wellbeing, and fosters a unique relationship with your pet. By following the rules, we can ensure that everyone enjoys their time in the city.”

Finally, it’s important to note that dogs are strictly prohibited from Lake Pertobe, including during local markets, which remain a popular destination during the summer months.
