Okeechobee Deputies Rescue Dog from Storm Drain, Reunite It with Owner

by Lisa

A routine call turned into a heartwarming rescue when deputies from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) saved a dog trapped in a storm drain, eventually reuniting it with its owner.

The drama unfolded on January 6, when a passerby reported hearing frantic barking coming from a storm drain at Gilbert Chevrolet on Highway 441 South. Upon arrival, an OCSO deputy identified the source of the noise but found the dog stuck deep within the drain, unable to reach it through the heavy metal cover.

Determined to save the frightened pup, OCSO deputies worked together to lift the grate, allowing them to access the smaller pipe where the dog was trapped. After careful and patient maneuvering, they were able to pull the dog to safety.

Though shaken, the dog appeared unharmed but was not wearing any identification. With no immediate leads on the dog’s owner, deputies turned to social media for help. A Facebook post from local resident Catherine Celeste soon surfaced. Celeste had been searching for her dog, “Cutie,” since New Year’s Eve after the pup ran off, likely startled by fireworks.

Upon confirming that the dog rescued from the storm drain was indeed Cutie, Celeste expressed her joy and made arrangements to bring her beloved pet home.
