A remarkable story of survival and maternal love has emerged from Southwest Memphis, where a mother dog, severely injured after being shot four times, continues to care for her 11 newborn puppies. Despite the trauma she endured, the dog, affectionately named “Mama,” has shown incredible resilience, making a stunning recovery with the help of generous donations and the devoted care of the Streetdog Foundation.
On January 5, Memphis police responded to a call about an injured dog at a local residence. The man who called authorities claimed he shot the stray dog after it charged at him and his family. An x-ray revealed that one bullet had passed through her body, while three others remained lodged in her frame. Fortunately, none of the bullets struck vital organs. One bullet caused bone damage to her vertebrae, potentially affecting her spinal cord.
Mama’s story captivated the community, leading to an outpouring of support. Streetdog Foundation, a volunteer-run organization that rescues animals in need, launched a fundraising campaign that raised over $14,000 for Mama’s treatment and care. Additionally, a generous donor has pledged to match donations up to $15,000.
Kent and Melanie Pafford, founders of the Streetdog Foundation, expressed their astonishment at Mama’s survival. “It’s a miracle she’s alive after taking four direct hits,” Kent remarked, detailing the nature of the wounds. While there are concerns about the remaining bullets, the focus has shifted to ensuring Mama’s recovery and her ability to nurse her pups.
Mama’s 11 puppies, who were only days old when rescued, are receiving around-the-clock care at Grace Animal Hospital. Melanie Pafford shared that they have been rotating the puppies for feeding, as Mama is still recovering and needs additional support to feed all of them.
Streetdog Foundation’s volunteers have been actively involved in Mama’s care, ensuring she is well-nourished and able to tend to her pups. Despite the pain she is still experiencing, Mama continues to show an unwavering bond with her puppies, who are thriving under her care. “She’s a fighter, and an incredible mom,” the foundation stated in a recent social media post.
As of January 7, Mama was seen walking with a slight limp, a hopeful sign of her ongoing recovery. Her 11 puppies, seven males and four females, are also progressing well, with the team keeping a special eye on the smallest of the litter, who requires extra nursing time.
The Streetdog Foundation expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community, and they continue to seek foster families for Mama and her pups as they continue to heal. “The bond between Mama and her puppies is truly beautiful, and she is a testament to the strength of motherhood,” the foundation shared in an update.
This incredible tale of survival and love highlights the power of community support and the resilience of animals in the face of adversity.
