A poignant tale of loyalty is unfolding in Nakhon Ratchasima province, where a dog named Moo Daeng has captured the hearts of locals by continuing to wait for her deceased owner outside a convenience store. Moo Daeng’s unwavering devotion to her late master has earned her the affectionate nickname “The Hachiko of Korat,” drawing comparisons to the famous Japanese dog, Hachiko, who waited for his owner at Shibuya Station every day for nearly ten years after his death.
Moo Daeng, a dog of humble appearance, had lived with a homeless man who would often sell items or receive donations in the bustling Ya Mo market area. The pair were inseparable, and Moo Daeng would regularly wait outside the 7-Eleven convenience store, a place they frequented as their resting spot.
Tragically, in November 2024, Moo Daeng’s owner fell seriously ill and passed away. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Moo Daeng refused to leave her usual spot, steadfastly waiting for her master, just as Hachiko had done decades ago in Japan.
The story of Moo Daeng quickly went viral after being shared on the Facebook page “Korat: The City You Can Create,” touching the hearts of thousands. Locals have since rallied around the dog, with the staff at the convenience store caring for her, providing food and blankets during the colder months. Signs have been posted to guide visitors on how to feed her properly, as certain foods, like milk or liver, could harm her health.
On January 15, 2025, a reporter from Khaosod visited the spot and found Moo Daeng resting peacefully in front of the store, wearing a red shirt. She was greeted by local vendors and passersby, some of whom brought her treats. Her calm demeanor and friendly nature have made her a beloved figure at the market, with many customers stopping to interact with her.
Moo Daeng, originally named “Noo Daeng” (Red Mouse) due to her small, chubby appearance, had been a regular presence in the area for years. According to Somnuk Wisetnok, a local banana fritter vendor, Moo Daeng had followed her owner around for four years before his passing. “She is a friendly dog, never aggressive, and gets along well with everyone,” said Wisetnok. “The market vendors all love her, and the convenience store staff has taken excellent care of her, even taking her to the vet.”
Though her owner is gone, Moo Daeng continues to remain at her post, a silent tribute to the bond between a dog and her master. Her story serves as a reminder of the extraordinary loyalty and love that animals can offer.
