Dog training expert Sam Hoke has unveiled a straightforward yet effective technique to ensure your dog always responds when called, making the recall command easier to master.
Teaching your dog to return to you when called can be a challenging task, but Hoke believes it’s essential for both safety and smooth communication between pets and their owners. In a TikTok video, he shares a simple approach to making recall training more successful.
“If you’ve ever called your dog and they ignored you or ran away, there’s a solution,” Hoke explains.
Hoke, who was training his Labrador, Mo, during the video, explains the first key step in recall training: never call your dog unless you have something positive to offer.
“Think of it this way: if your friend always texts you to complain, how long until you stop responding?” Hoke compares, emphasizing that dogs are no different. He urges owners to stop calling their dogs with commands or reprimands, and instead, make the recall a rewarding experience.
Hoke’s strategy involves calling Mo over for simple rewards such as treats or praise, creating positive associations with returning to his owner. By repeating this in fun and engaging environments, like a park, Hoke ensures his dog is always eager to respond.
This technique helps establish recall as a habit that dogs enjoy, rather than a chore they feel forced to do.
