Dog trainer John Gotta, known as @gottatrain on TikTok, has shared a practical tip to help owners stop their dogs from pulling during walks, without needing extra training or complicated techniques.
John’s method involves using a 36″ slip lead, which combines a collar and leash into one continuous loop that goes around the dog’s neck. When the dog pulls, the pressure from the lead teaches the dog to turn the pressure off by making 180° turns. The key, according to John, is to vary the number of steps between each turn and to use leash pressure when the dog tests the boundary. This simple technique helps control the dog’s pulling without the need for complex commands.
John emphasizes that trainers should not overcomplicate the process. He encourages owners to avoid methods that tire out the dog, stating, “If your trainer has to tire out your happy-go-lucky dog to get them to walk nicely…run!”
Other useful tips for reducing leash pulling include practicing name recognition, where you call your dog’s name and reward them when they make eye contact. Additionally, when your dog starts pulling, stop walking immediately and avoid yanking or pulling back on the leash, as this can encourage the behavior.
This method has already proven successful for many, with dog owners confirming that they’ve been able to teach even their older dogs new tricks.
