Injured Puppy Dumped with the Trash Gets ‘Second Chance’ as a Beloved Therapy Dog for Tenn

by Lisa

Simone, a puppy found abandoned in a crate between trash cans in Memphis, Tennessee, has transformed from a neglected stray to a cherished therapy dog at University Middle School.

In July 2024, a Good Samaritan discovered Simone and her two siblings in a grim condition—malnourished, balding, and suffering from severe mange and burns from being left in a hot metal crate during a heatwave. Tails of Hope Dog Rescue took in the trio, recognizing their potential for recovery with the right care and affection. The puppies, named after Olympic athletes to honor their resilience—Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, and Kobe Bryant—began their journey to recovery.

Simone, in particular, stood out with her calm, patient demeanor, making her an ideal candidate for therapy dog training. After her healing process, she was adopted by Sally Parish, Vice Provost and Director of Schools at the University of Memphis, who was seeking a therapy dog for a new pilot program at University Middle School.

Simone’s training included basic obedience as well as specialized therapy and comfort skills. Once fully trained, she became a beloved presence in the school, where she works with approximately 270 students. Simone’s impact has been profound. She brings joy to students, lifts their spirits, and offers comfort to those who may lack it at home. Her presence has even been shown to improve academic performance, with students performing better on tests when she’s around.

Beyond her work at school, Simone’s influence extends to her home, where she has inspired her family to become more involved in animal rescue. Parish describes Simone’s journey as a powerful reminder that everyone, whether human or animal, deserves a second chance.

Simone’s transformation from an abandoned pup to a symbol of hope and love for the students at University Middle School serves as a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of giving others—both people and animals—a chance to thrive despite their pasts.
