Valentina Pinci always admired the unique beauty of Xoloitzcuintles, the Mexican hairless dogs with a striking appearance. When she adopted her own Xolo, Quetzalli, she was overjoyed. To Valentina, Quetzalli was perfect in every way. However, after relocating to Puerto Rico, where Xolos are unfamiliar, their walks often triggered mixed reactions. “We would get a lot of curiosity, but sometimes disgust or even fear!” Valentina told The Dodo, noting the discomfort some people felt seeing Quetzalli’s distinctive look.
Xolos are known for their nearly hairless bodies and elegant features, which can provoke both admiration and unease. Valentina wanted others to see Quetzalli’s beauty the way she did. As an artist with an appreciation for pre-Hispanic culture, Valentina had previously painted a Xolo belonging to her ex. While Quetzalli was still a puppy, Valentina occasionally painted her face, but it wasn’t a regular activity. Years later, inspiration struck.
One day, feeling down, Valentina spent the morning doodling mandalas on Quetzalli’s body. “She was an absolute babe about it. Napped the whole time, didn’t grumble, or even move unless I politely asked her to,” Valentina recalled. This activity became therapeutic for Valentina and also changed the public’s reaction. The painted designs on Quetzalli made people much more receptive and friendly, with children even exclaiming, “Dante from Coco!”
From then on, painting Quetzalli became a cherished ritual. Valentina uses non-toxic, dog-safe paints to transform Quetzalli’s sleek, hairless body into a moving work of art. The practice not only brings joy to Valentina but also helps educate others about the Xoloitzcuintle’s rich history and cultural significance.
With each artistic creation, Valentina and Quetzalli not only spread joy but also challenge misconceptions about the breed. The dog that was once met with fear now draws smiles and curiosity, while also allowing Valentina to share her love and knowledge of the Xoloitzcuintle’s heritage.
