Pet owners have been urged to exercise caution following reports of a dangerous dog treat linked to a potentially fatal condition known as “werewolf syndrome.” The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning regarding a specific brand of bone chews, which have been connected to severe and alarming symptoms in dogs, including panic attacks, aggression, and even death.
The alert stems from incidents reported in the EU, particularly in the Netherlands, where a dog’s death was attributed to chewing on products from the brand Barkoo. While no confirmed cases have been reported in the UK, the FSA cautioned that some pet owners may have unknowingly purchased these chews from international online retailers.
The chews, which are produced in China, have been linked to behavioral changes in dogs, including spasms, epileptic fits, and, in severe cases, fatal reactions. Tina Potter, head of incidents at the FSA, emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the distribution of the products in the UK. “While there is no confirmed distribution of affected products to the UK, consumers may have purchased them online,” Potter stated. “As a precaution, we are advising owners to avoid feeding these chews to their dogs.”
The FSA reassured the public that there is no evidence suggesting the products pose a risk to human health. However, pet owners have been strongly advised to check for these chews in their homes and seek immediate veterinary attention if their dog shows signs of illness. Vets are also being alerted to recognize the symptoms associated with this condition, as the chews have a long shelf life and may have been purchased months ago.
The FSA continues to monitor the situation, urging vigilance among pet owners and medical professionals alike.
