For Juliet McShane, 51, living with vision loss caused by Stargardt disease has often meant navigating a world full of obstacles. Diagnosed with the condition at 18, she has limited central vision, which makes everyday tasks daunting. However, everything changed when she adopted Jim, a rescue dog, six years ago.
Jim, a 10-year-old Saluki cross with anxiety issues, has become more than just a pet to Juliet—he’s transformed her life. Walking him daily has not only improved her physical and mental wellbeing, but it’s also given her the confidence to step outside her comfort zone. Before Jim, Juliet rarely walked for pleasure, and the idea of venturing out alone was overwhelming. Now, she eagerly anticipates their daily walks.
“Jim has given me the motivation to get out more. Knowing he enjoys it so much makes me push through my fears,” Juliet shared. “Walking with him has become something I truly look forward to—it’s freedom.”
Though Jim isn’t a formally trained service dog, his natural instincts have helped Juliet navigate the world around her. She trusts him to avoid obstacles when he’s on the lead, allowing her to walk with confidence. “He’s made me love being outdoors again,” she said. “My focus shifts from my disability to enjoying the moment with him.”
Juliet’s favorite walks include the Wirral Way, the beach between Hoylake and Red Rocks, and local green spaces where Jim can run freely. These walks offer more than just exercise; they’ve become a way for Juliet to reconnect with the world, build her independence, and improve her overall wellbeing.
Jim has also helped Juliet overcome the social isolation often experienced by people with disabilities. “He’s a great conversation starter,” Juliet explained. “Having Jim has made it easier to chat with other dog owners and people in the community. He brings joy not only to me but to those we meet.”
