The Knox City Council is inviting both pet owners and non-pet owners to contribute ideas on managing dogs and cats in the community. This initiative is part of the review and renewal of the Domestic Animal Management Plan (2021-2025), which councils are required to update every four years under legislation.
The council aims to create a plan that promotes responsible pet ownership, reduces the risks of dog attacks, and minimizes nuisances caused by pets. It also seeks to address issues such as encouraging pet registration and identification, controlling overpopulation and euthanasia rates, and managing dogs in public spaces.
Currently, there are approximately 16,640 registered dogs and 6,482 registered cats in the Knox area. To ensure the plan balances the needs of all community members, feedback is being gathered from both pet owners and non-pet owners. The goal is to ensure responsible pet ownership benefits everyone, whether or not they own pets.
The council is collecting feedback until Sunday, 13 April. After this, it will review the responses and begin drafting a new plan, which will be shared for further community consultation later in the year.
