Startup Aims to Extend Lifespan for Dogs with New Product

by Lisa

Loyal, a canine longevity startup, is stepping up its efforts to extend the lives of our beloved pets with a new product designed to combat aging. The company recently secured $22 million in a funding round, bringing its total investment to over $150 million.

The startup’s first product, LOY-002, is a daily tablet for dogs aged 10 and older, weighing at least 14 pounds. The tablet targets metabolic dysfunction, one of the primary causes of aging, to reduce the risk and severity of age-related diseases. Recently, LOY-002 met the FDA’s “reasonable expectation of effectiveness” requirement, moving it closer to approval.

Loyal is not stopping there. The company is also developing two other products—LOY-001, a long-acting injectable, and LOY-003, a daily pill designed specifically for larger dog breeds, which typically have a shorter lifespan compared to smaller dogs. Once FDA-approved, these products will be available through veterinarians, who will prescribe them to pet owners.

The pet healthcare market is booming, with Americans spending an estimated $150.6 billion on their pets in 2024. Other startups are also competing in this space. Embark, a DNA testing company for dogs, has raised around $94 million to assess health risks and offer supplements. Meanwhile, Mammaly, a German startup, is focused on longevity products aimed at promoting cell renewal and protecting against damage. Another growing trend is the rise of customized, human-grade pet food.

Interestingly, Loyal’s CEO, Celine Halioua, sees the potential for these products to benefit humans as well. Since dogs and humans share similar environmental factors and sometimes even diets, the diseases related to aging in both species are often comparable. As Loyal continues to develop its products, it hopes that improving the health and longevity of dogs may, in turn, provide insights into extending human life.

In the end, the company’s mission is clear: ensure that both our furry companions and we can enjoy as much time together as possible.
