LaSalle Dog Adoption Event Promotes Rescue Pet Awareness

by Lisa

Dogs in need of loving homes captured the hearts of many during an adoption event in LaSalle on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Hosted at the Hungry Pooch, the event featured five rescue dogs available for adoption through Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) of Windsor-Essex County.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the organization’s mission and connect potential adopters with dogs looking for new families. “We just want people to come meet the dogs,” said Deborah Anderson, an organizer of the event. “If they fall in love with a dog, there are applications they can fill out. Our goal is to hopefully get at least one good application for the event, but sometimes it doesn’t work out.”

SCAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs at risk of euthanasia in high-kill shelters, particularly from Texas, as well as those rescued from puppy mills across Ontario. “Texas has high kill shelters, and they have a lot of dogs that are just dumped. They’re sad, they’re starving, and they’re abused,” Anderson explained. “We work with a whole bunch of rescue groups all across Canada and the United States for these animals.”

Saturday’s event not only sought to find families for the dogs but also aimed to boost SCAR’s visibility in the community. The organization rescues dozens of dogs annually, with a team of volunteers who foster the dogs until they are ready for permanent homes.

“It’s great to give those dogs an opportunity to find a forever home,” said Tera Deschamps, the store manager at Hungry Pooch. “Sometimes families can’t provide the proper care for a dog anymore, and it doesn’t work out for them.”

The dogs available for adoption at the event varied in age, size, and personality, ranging from playful and energetic to calm and laid-back, ensuring there was a match for every type of family looking to adopt a pet.
