A pregnant woman has shared her dilemma on Reddit, revealing that she asked her Army boyfriend to temporarily rehome his untrained dog while she cares for their newborn. However, she claims he has been trying to guilt her into keeping the pet while he is deployed for several months.
The 32-year-old woman explained in a post on the “Am I the A——” forum that she and her 31-year-old boyfriend are expecting their first child. Recently, he made the sudden decision to rejoin the Army after losing his job, with deployment expected to happen in just two weeks. His training and reassignment could keep him away until the end of August.
The woman, who has no family or friends nearby, expressed concerns about being left to care for a newborn and her boyfriend’s dog without any help or respite. She noted that the dog, which she described as “pretty big,” has numerous behavioral issues that include being hyperactive, untrained, and destructive. The dog has torn up furniture, stolen food, and even become aggressive, growling and biting her and her boyfriend on occasion.
Despite the woman’s repeated requests for her boyfriend to address the dog’s behavior over the past 9-10 months, she said nothing had been done to resolve the issues. Concerned for her safety and the well-being of her unborn child—especially since the dog has never been around babies—she felt that caring for the dog while managing a newborn would be too much to handle alone.
The woman also shared that her boyfriend has dismissed her concerns and is now trying to guilt her into taking care of the dog while he’s away. She questioned whether it was unreasonable to ask him to make other arrangements for the dog, or if she should “suck it up” and deal with the situation.
Reddit users quickly rallied behind her, with many agreeing that her boyfriend’s behavior was unfair. Commenters emphasized that the woman’s safety and well-being should be prioritized, with one user pointing out that the boyfriend was “abandoning” her and their child by not taking responsibility for his pet before his deployment.
Overall, the majority of responses supported the woman’s request for her boyfriend to make arrangements for the dog, expressing that he needed to reconsider his priorities before leaving for his service.
