Bob, a jet-black dog with a mix of Alsatian, Border Collie, and Labrador, has made history by becoming the first dog to receive a lifetime membership at Hunwick Working Men’s Club in Crook. The well-loved therapy dog, owned by Nicky Morson of Willington, has been a regular visitor to the club since his early days, getting accustomed to socializing and crowds as part of his therapy dog training.
His presence at the club has been a hit among members, with many club-goers eager to interact with him. When membership renewals came up, a committee member noticed that Bob, a frequent visitor, didn’t have his own membership. In recognition of his loyal presence, the club awarded him a lifetime membership with the C.I.U., making him a unique honorary member.
Nicky, who is also the communications and support lead at the Cornerstone charity, said, “People in the club love him.” Lisa Hawkins, the club stewardess, plays a significant role in Bob’s visits, ensuring he has fresh water and plenty of treats. “Bob brings smiles into the club, and everyone loves him,” she said, adding that he has a special place behind the bar and is a favorite topic of conversation.
Beyond his social visits to the club, Bob has also made history as the first therapy dog in England to work with homeless people. Nearly four years old, Bob has been a therapy dog for almost a year, working alongside Nicky at Cornerstone, a charity that supports those in need.
In his downtime, Bob enjoys relaxing in his favorite spot behind the bar or in the back room, observing patrons as they play pool. Bob’s unique role in the community has made him a beloved figure at the Hunwick Working Men’s Club and beyond.
