Mia, The Country’s Most Unwanted Dog, Finds Her Forever Home After Long Wait

by Lisa

Mia, a dog who was rescued at just 9 days old, has spent her early years watching over 1,500 animals get adopted before her. Despite being a young puppy, she faced an incredibly long wait for a forever home, becoming known as the country’s most unwanted dog.

Rescued alongside her mother, Mia was taken in by the RSPCA’s Southridge Animal Center, where she received much-needed care and attention. Puppies typically have a high demand and are quickly adopted, but for reasons unknown, Mia was overlooked time and time again. Months turned into years, and she continued to watch other animals find their homes, all while waiting for her turn.

“Her long wait was completely heartbreaking,” said Claire Hoffman, behavior and welfare advisor at RSPCA Southridge. “We think she was the RSPCA’s longest ‘available for rehoming’ pet and the country’s most unwanted dog, a title no animal deserves.”

In October, Mia turned five at the shelter, and her friends there celebrated with a party, hoping that it would be her last birthday spent waiting. Their collective wish was finally granted several months later when Mia’s new dad, Chris Greenwell, found her.

Mia, who had spent nearly her entire life at the shelter, now thrives in her new home, about 200 miles away. “She loves making new friends, both doggy and human, and you can see the enjoyment in her when we go out for walks or play with toys together,” Chris said. “I’m so pleased I’ve been able to give her a happy life and a loving home.”

Mia is now living her best life, experiencing things she missed while in the shelter: a favorite couch, hikes, rivers, and even interrupting her dad during work meetings. She has already made a mark on his heart, destroying a few toys along the way.

“She’s exceeded expectations in every way,” Chris added. “Everyone she meets, she wins over—even people who aren’t ‘doggy people.’ Mia really is the epitome of man’s best friend.”

Now, Mia is making up for lost time, showing just how resilient and full of love a dog can be, no matter how long it takes to find a home.
