Innovative Behavioral Therapist Revolutionizing Dog Training

by Lisa

Billie Talyn Groom, an award-winning behavioral therapist with nearly four decades of experience, is transforming the landscape of dog training. Known for her unique approach, Groom has worked with countless dogs and their owners, developing the innovative Canine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CCBT), a method that integrates cognition and emotion in addressing behavioral issues in dogs.

Drawing from years of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs, Groom created CCBT, which focuses on helping dogs process and regulate their behaviors through cognitive exercises. “CCBT encourages dogs to reset their thought patterns, similar to how humans self-regulate,” Groom explained.

Living in Saskatchewan for over a decade and in the Southwest for a year, Groom’s method has gained widespread attention for its effectiveness, particularly in treating anxiety, fear, aggression, and behaviors common among adolescent, adult, and adopted dogs.

In 2020, Groom’s book on CCBT won the American Best Book Fest Award, and she launched a podcast, “Dog Training Disrupted,” offering insights into canine psychology, training, and welfare. Her online educational platform, the Institute of Canine Psychotherapy, offers diplomas in CCBT and certifications in animal science and welfare, further expanding her impact.

Motivated by the high rates of dog surrender and euthanasia, Groom’s research and method have garnered global recognition, especially for their success in reducing these statistics. Through her virtual program, she coaches pet owners and students worldwide, achieving a remarkable success rate in canine behavior modification.

Groom’s work has been featured in prominent media outlets, including Psychology Today, Roku TV, LA Tribune, and CTV News. She will also speak at an upcoming TEDx Talk at the University of Regina on May 17.

As the animal welfare sector faces growing challenges, Groom believes CCBT offers a sustainable solution. “With increasing awareness of animals as sentient beings, CCBT is gaining recognition as a vital tool in canine behavior and welfare,” she stated. Her long-term goal is to empower professionals globally with advanced practices to enhance their impact locally and worldwide.
