How to Control Your Dog Around Wild Animals – Expert Tips

by Lisa

As dogs explore the great outdoors, they often come across wild animals, and these encounters can surprise both pet owners and their furry companions. Spring, in particular, is a season when wildlife becomes more active. Annie-Mae Levy, a professional dog trainer and behaviourist, shares her advice on how to safely navigate such situations with your pet.

1. Birds (Pheasants, Seagulls, Swans)

Pheasants, especially in rural areas during hunting season, may startle dogs, prompting them to chase. Seagulls, particularly in coastal areas, can become aggressive when protecting their nests. Swans are territorial, especially around lakes and rivers.

Expert Tip: Keep your dog on a leash around game birds and avoid feeding your dog near seagulls. If a swan approaches, calmly move your dog away from the water.

2. Small Animals (Hedgehogs, Rabbits, Rats)

Hedgehogs have sharp spines, which can harm a curious dog. Rabbits, often targeted by dogs’ chase instincts, can be carriers of parasites. Rats, too, carry diseases like leptospirosis.

Expert Tip: Call your dog away from hedgehogs immediately, avoid burrows, and keep dogs away from areas where rats are common, like bins and alleys.

3. Medium-Sized Animals (Foxes, Badgers, Deer)

Foxes are generally not a nuisance but may become aggressive when cornered. Badgers are strong diggers and could harm your dog, while deer, especially stags during the rutting season (September-November), can be hostile.

Expert Tip: Keep your dog leashed around foxes, avoid badger habitats, and ensure your dog stays on a leash near deer habitats, particularly during rutting season.

By keeping your dog under control and following these expert recommendations, you can ensure that both your pet and the wild animals they encounter stay safe.
