The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is advising dog owners to keep their pets on a leash this spring to prevent them from chasing or disturbing wildlife, particularly big game animals that are especially vulnerable during this time.
Spring is a critical period for wildlife, as many animals, including deer, are weakened by the harsh winter months and scarce food sources. Unleashed dogs may instinctively chase after these animals, putting unnecessary stress on them and potentially wasting valuable energy that could impact their survival.
Dax Mangus, the DWR’s Big Game Coordinator, explained that wildlife, in search of new vegetation, often move to lower elevations and south-facing slopes, which may bring them into closer proximity to roads and populated areas. This increases the likelihood of encounters with domestic pets.
The DWR also emphasized that in national forests, while pets are allowed, they must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet in developed recreation areas and on trails. This measure is in place to help ensure both the safety of wildlife and the well-being of pets.
