A local family’s anguish turned to relief after their dog, Charlie, was found four days after disappearing in Livonia.
The search for Charlie began Wednesday when his owner, Aislynn Kaminski, was driving through a rough patch of road at Newburg and Plymouth. A large pothole caused Charlie to panic and jump out of the car window.
On Sunday afternoon, James Hirschfeld, a retired law enforcement officer working security for a vehicle lot, spotted a dog on the premises. While patrolling, Hirschfeld noticed barking and found a large German Shepherd mix hiding underneath a truck. Upon closer inspection, he realized the dog was Charlie.
Despite the initial fear and confusion, Hirschfeld managed to call Livonia police for backup, as the lot was locked and Charlie was scared. Hirschfeld’s wife, upon hearing about the incident, recognized Charlie from social media posts and immediately contacted Kaminski.
Kaminski arrived shortly afterward, and upon seeing her, Charlie ran straight into her arms. “It was probably one of the best moments of my life,” Kaminski said, overwhelmed with joy.
Charlie is now recovering, and Kaminski expressed her gratitude for Hirschfeld’s persistence and the support from the community. To prevent future incidents, she has equipped Charlie with a tracker on his collar and plans to have him microchipped.
The emotional reunion has been a beacon of hope for other pet owners, as Kaminski advises others to take extra precautions when traveling with their pets.
