After 18 months in captivity, Billie, a dog from Kibbutz Nir Oz, is finally reunited with her owner, Rachel Dancyg. The heartwarming reunion follows an unexpected discovery by a Golani Brigade reservist serving in Rafah, who found Billie while on duty.
Billie had been kidnapped on October 7, 2023, by militants during a raid that devastated the region. Rachel’s search for her pet had been relentless, with flyers and social media appeals providing no answers. For months, she feared the worst about Billie’s fate.
The breakthrough came when the reservist, who initially considered adopting the dog, brought Billie to Israel for vaccinations. During a routine vet visit, a microchip scan revealed Billie’s true identity as the dog of Rachel Dancyg, a connection that would bring a bittersweet relief. Rachel’s ex-husband, Alex Dancyg, and her brother, Itzik Elgart, had been kidnapped and murdered during the same attack, making Billie’s return all the more emotional.
In an interview with Kan Reshet Bet, Rachel expressed her shock and joy, stating, “I hoped, but I didn’t believe she was alive. She survived because she’s my dog.” Despite the overwhelming joy of reuniting with Billie, Rachel also reflected on the tragic loss of her loved ones, saying, “If only Itzik and Alex were coming back too.”
On that fateful morning, as Rachel stepped out of the safe room to make coffee, militants entered the home, leading her to quickly seek shelter. Billie, left in the living room, was taken by force to Gaza. Today, after a year and a half, Rachel can finally hold her dog again.
The reunion of Rachel and Billie symbolizes both the horrors of the past and the glimmer of hope that remains even in the darkest of times.
