Many dog owners believe they understand every little quirk and behavior of their pets, but animal behavior experts caution against making assumptions. While dogs are known for their loyalty and affection, some of their actions can be misunderstood, often leading to misinterpretation by well-meaning owners.
In a recent podcast episode on Huberman Lab, neuroscientist Andrew Huberman and Dr. Karolina Westlund, a professor of ethology at the University of Stockholm, discussed the complex needs of domesticated animals, particularly dogs. They explored how certain behaviors are often misinterpreted by humans, leading to unnecessary stress or discomfort for the animals.
One commonly misinterpreted behavior is when a dog wags its tail. While many believe tail wagging universally signals happiness, it can also indicate stress or anxiety, depending on the context, such as when the tail is held high and stiff. Understanding the subtle nuances of body language, like the position of the tail and the rest of the dog’s body, can offer clearer insight into what the dog is truly feeling.
Another frequently misunderstood behavior is when a dog follows its owner around the house or seems overly attached. While it may appear to be a sign of affection or attachment, it can sometimes be a sign of separation anxiety, particularly if the dog becomes distressed when the owner leaves the room. This behavior could be due to the dog’s need for security and comfort, not just love.
Huberman and Westlund emphasized the importance of recognizing the often-overlooked needs of our pets and finding ways to improve their well-being, from better interpreting their behaviors to creating environments that reduce stress.
By learning more about these behaviors, dog owners can deepen their relationship with their pets and provide better care tailored to their true emotional and physical needs.
