BRISTOL, R.I. – A Warren family is grappling with heartbreak following the untimely demise of their cherished pet, Milo, during a brief stay at a local kennel. What was meant to be a routine experience turned into a nightmare as Milo was subjected to a fatal attack by another dog while in the care of the establishment.
Steve and Joy Quigley, Milo’s grieving owners, fondly recall their beloved canine companion as an exuberant and loving member of their family. Milo’s joy for toys and swimming in the pool endeared him to his family, while his visits to Leaders of the Pack on Metacom Avenue allowed him to engage in playful interactions with fellow canines.
The Quigleys entrusted Milo’s care to the Bristol kennel for a mere two-night stay, unaware that this decision would result in their beloved pet’s tragic demise. Regrettably, a dog attack transpired at the kennel, ending Milo’s life abruptly just two hours before the Quigleys were scheduled to retrieve him.
The devastating incident was documented in a police report disclosed to 12 News by the Quigleys. According to the report, an employee of the kennel was in the midst of preparing morning meals for the dogs, who were enjoying outdoor playtime together. In a distressing turn of events, another dog suddenly targeted Milo, clenching its jaws around his throat.
Immediate intervention by the kennel employee led to the separation of the dogs, but the damage had been done. Milo’s life ebbed away as the employee attended to him in his final moments.
The kennel’s owner, Tina Leocadio of Leader of the Pack, expressed profound sorrow for the Quigleys and the traumatic incident that unfolded. Leocadio, who has a personal connection with each dog in her care, stood by her employee’s actions, asserting that the employee followed protocols and acted in alignment with her own principles.
The dog responsible for the attack is presently under quarantine at the Bristol Animal Shelter until August 30. Authorities have informed the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of the incident, and a vicious dog hearing has been requested.
While the dog that attacked Milo exhibited aggression in the past during nail-clipping attempts, the incident remains an isolated occurrence. Both dogs involved had no prior documented history of aggression. The investigation continues to delve into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy that has left a family bereaved and questioning the safety protocols in place at such facilities.
