Surge in Tick Fever Cases Among Dogs Prompts Postponement of Sterilization for Infected Stray Canines

by Lisa

Pune: The ongoing monsoon season has led to a significant rise in tick fever cases among dogs, both pet and stray, prompting veterinarians and the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) veterinary department to take preventive measures. As the city experiences increased rainfall, the prevalence of tick fever has surged, with veterinary hospitals witnessing an uptick in cases.

Dr. Sarika Funde, veterinary superintendent at PMC, highlighted the escalating tick fever cases among pedigree and stray dogs. As a precautionary step, PMC has advised postponing the sterilization of stray dogs that are infected with tick fever. The civic body has also initiated disinfection activities aimed at eradicating the ticks, which play a crucial role in the transmission of the disease.

The recent showers in the city have resulted in a higher incidence of tick fever cases in dogs. Veterinarians have reported approximately eight to 10 cases daily over the past few weeks, indicating a growing concern. Pet owners have increasingly sought medical attention for their dogs suffering from tick fever. Vets emphasize the importance of addressing tick-related issues promptly, underscoring the severity of ticks’ impact on pets’ well-being.

Tick fever is commonly transmitted through contact with an infected tick. The parasites acquire the infection from other animals and pass it on to dogs through bites. Symptoms of tick fever include fever, red spots on thin-skinned areas, loss of appetite, and paleness. In severe cases, it can result in bleeding through the nose, vomiting, and swollen lymph nodes.

Veterinarians urge pet owners to remain vigilant, especially during the peak tick fever season in August. Even a couple of visible ticks on pets should not be ignored, as any behavioral changes like loss of appetite warrant prompt attention. Delayed diagnosis can lead to severe tick fever in pets.

To mitigate the spread of tick fever, vets advise pet owners to adopt preventive measures such as using special collars, medicinal sprays, and regular veterinary check-ups. The collaborative efforts of pet owners, veterinary professionals, and local authorities play a pivotal role in safeguarding the well-being of dogs during the monsoon season.
