REHOBOTH BEACH, DE – As the summer season draws to a close, the picturesque Rehoboth Beach boardwalk has been noticeably absent of a familiar sight – dogs. However, a recent survey initiated by the City of Rehoboth Beach is sparking discussion about the potential inclusion of dogs in these areas. The survey seeks the public’s opinion to gauge interest in changing the current regulations.
Currently, dogs are not allowed on the beach or boardwalk from May 1 to September 30. The current survey considers the possibility of allowing dogs during these months, but only during off-peak hours.
This survey is expected to be presented to the city’s Board of Commissioners in the coming autumn months. If a consensus is reached, the revised regulations could be in place for the coming season.
Visitor Cathy Johnson, accompanied by her canine companions Stella and Gracie, explained how the strict dog regulations had influenced her choice of beach destination. Johnson revealed: “In the past we’ve always gone to Cape May, it’s just very dog friendly, you can actually take them on the beach.
Meanwhile, long-time Rehoboth visitor Tim McLaughlin voiced his support for the proposed change, stressing the need for clear guidelines. He said: “I think there should be a limit for people who don’t know how to take care of their dogs. If they take care of them, that’s fine, but there are a lot of people who don’t take care of them.
The deliberations surrounding the potential inclusion of dogs on Rehoboth Beach’s beaches and boardwalks reflect a balance between the desires of pet owners and the need for responsible pet ownership in public spaces. As the city moves forward with these discussions, community feedback will play a key role in shaping the final decision and any policy changes.
