Attention, dog owners in the UK: a recent warning has been issued regarding the importance of having accurate information on your canine companion’s collar. Failure to comply with this law could result in fines of up to £2,000.
What the Law Requires:
Under UK law, all dogs must wear a collar that displays the owner’s name and address when in a public place. While adding a phone number is optional, it is strongly recommended to enhance the safety of your pet. The law aims to ensure the quick identification and return of lost dogs to their owners.
Blue Cross Highlights Legal Requirements:
Leading animal charity Blue Cross has emphasized the legal requirements for dog owners. A spokesperson for the charity clarified that even if a dog is microchipped, they must still wear a collar or tag displaying the necessary information. However, exemptions may apply for some working dogs.
The spokesperson further advised dog owners to include their mobile phone number on the collar or tag, enabling swift contact in case the dog goes missing.
Microchipping and Puppy Regulations:
The law also mandates that puppies must be microchipped before they go to their new homes. Breeders are responsible for ensuring microchipping and registration, with the breeder listed as the first registered keeper. Failure to register the puppy by the time they reach eight weeks old is a violation of the law.
Additionally, breeders are required to provide correct microchip paperwork to the new owner when the puppy is rehomed. The microchipping law applies to dogs and puppies aged over eight weeks. Exemptions can be granted if a veterinarian determines a valid health reason not to microchip a dog. In such cases, the vet must issue the owner a certificate of exemption.
Owners are also responsible for keeping their pets’ microchip details up to date, especially if they change their address. When rehoming a dog, owners must provide the correct microchip registration paperwork to the new owner, who then registers as the dog’s new owner with the microchip database.
Stay Compliant and Keep Your Pets Safe:
Dog owners are urged to comply with these legal requirements to ensure the safety and proper identification of their furry family members. By doing so, you not only avoid potential fines but also contribute to the swift reunion of lost pets with their owners.
