In a tragic incident in Allens Rivulet, Tasmania, an unregistered dog was responsible for the death of a 66-year-old man and the serious injury of a 64-year-old woman. The dog, which appeared to be a Rottweiler according to the Kingborough Council, initiated the attack that led to this unfortunate turn of events.
The ordeal came to light after a concerned neighbor heard a commotion at the Allens Rivulet property and promptly alerted the police at approximately 10.40 pm on a fateful Sunday.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered the man had sustained severe injuries to his lower legs, and, despite their best efforts, he tragically passed away at the scene. The woman, who resided with the deceased, was swiftly transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital due to serious leg injuries. Currently, she is reported to be in a stable condition, on the path to recovery.
To protect the privacy of those involved, the police have refrained from disclosing their names, and they have also kept the dog’s breed confidential. Nevertheless, the Kingborough Council has indicated that the dog bore a resemblance to a Rottweiler breed, even though they could not confirm its exact lineage. Notably, the dog was not registered with the council.
In accordance with police instructions, a council animal management officer humanely euthanized the dog at the property. Tasmania Police Inspector Colin Riley emphasized the gravity of this decision, remarking, “This is a family that had a loved pet. Unfortunately, that animal has turned on them and it has had tragic outcomes. Decisions (to euthanize) are never taken lightly. We’re very grateful no one else was injured, including our own staff and emergency services.”
Gary Arnold, the General Manager of Kingborough Council, expressed condolences to the man’s family and friends, acknowledging the tragedy that has befallen the rural community, located approximately 25 minutes south of Hobart. He added, “We wish (the woman) a speedy recovery” as the community grapples with the somber aftermath of this unfortunate incident.
