Gainesville’s Lebowski’s Pup Pub recently introduced the city to its first-ever “Barktoberfest” event, a playful twist on the traditional German festival Oktoberfest, combining German cuisine, beer, and an abundance of dogs. The event brought together human and canine enthusiasts for a unique social gathering.
Clara Edwards, co-owner of Lebowski’s, revealed that the idea for “Barktoberfest” began to take shape in June. She described it as a fun time, and they added a new element to the mix – dogs.
The event attracted approximately 30 attendees and over 15 dogs of various breeds and sizes, ranging from puggles and pit bulls to beagles and schnauzers. Some dogs went all out, dressing up in the spirit of Barktoberfest and mingling with their fellow canines.
At Lebowski’s, patrons enjoyed German beer from a well-stocked bar that also featured a pup-friendly photo booth. Rachel Hickey, the owner of Mom’s OG on West University Avenue, has been a loyal supporter of Lebowski’s since its inception in December 2021. She and her dog, Rolo, have been regular visitors. Hickey appreciated the unique approach of Barktoberfest, noting that it offered a delightful twist on the traditional Oktoberfest theme.
Hickey also lauded Lebowski’s sense of community, emphasizing that even those without dogs are warmly welcomed by the staff and dog owners.
Gregg Cee, a staff member at Lebowski’s, highlighted a significant aspect that sets the establishment apart: the freedom dogs have. Unlike many places where dogs and their owners are limited to a patio area, Lebowski’s allows dogs to roam off-leash, allowing them to truly be themselves.
While the dogs enjoyed their newfound companionship, their owners also relished the opportunity to connect and socialize. This sense of community is a regular feature at Lebowski’s, which hosts numerous events, including movie nights, dog yoga sessions, and Christmas pet photos with Santa. They also organize weekly breed meetups, which enable dogs to interact with others of the same breed and offer owners a platform to share experiences and seek advice.
The pub’s flagship event, “Bark-o-ween,” is scheduled for the end of the month. Clara Edwards expressed her enthusiasm for it, explaining, “Any excuse to get dressed up, get the photo booth out and get dogs in costumes.”
She affirmed her intention to make Barktoberfest an annual tradition, providing a delightful and distinctive experience for dog lovers and their furry friends in Gainesville.
