by Lisa

Malibu’s Solstice Canyon, part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, has been temporarily closed after a dramatic encounter involving a young mountain lion attempting to attack a small, leashed dog. The incident took place on a Wednesday morning, prompting immediate safety measures.

In this harrowing encounter, the hiker, while trying to protect his dog, sustained a puncture wound and a minor scratch on his hand. Fortunately, the dog emerged unscathed from the encounter. According to Seth Riley, the wildlife branch chief for the US National Park Service, the hiker’s quick thinking and action prevented the mountain lion from capturing the dog.
