In South Lanarkshire, an XL bully-type dog was shot dead by police following an attack that left three people injured. The incident unfolded in the Mannering area of East Kilbride at 10:25 am on Sunday, prompting armed officers to respond to reports of a “dangerously out of control” dog attacking a Border Collie.
Local officers attempted to restrain the dog, resulting in minor injuries to three individuals. A video shared online captured six gunshots while the dog howled in the background. An 18-year-old woman has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with the incident, and the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner will conduct an investigation.
According to a Police Scotland spokesperson, the incident began when a large bulldog-type dog attacked a Collie on Mannering, East Kilbride. Local officers intervened to restrain the dog, which was deemed dangerously out of control. Armed officers were then called in, and the dog was shot dead by the police.
Three people suffered minor injuries during the incident, and ongoing inquiries aim to establish the breed of the dog. A continued police presence in the area is expected while investigations continue. The circumstances of the firearm discharge will be referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).
In connection with offenses related to the Dangerous Dog Act, the 18-year-old woman will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal. The incident coincides with new rules set to come into force on February 23, making it illegal to sell, advertise, gift, exchange, or let XL bully dogs stray. Additionally, XL bully dog owners will be required to muzzle and leash their dogs while in public places.
