The American Kennel Club (AKC) released its rankings on Wednesday, affirming that French Bulldogs maintained their position as the most commonly registered purebred dogs in the United States last year. According to the AKC, the French Bulldog remains the top breed, although opinions may vary within the dog community.
While some may perceive this as an achievement, devoted fans of the breed express concerns about the impact of popularity on their beloved dogs. Nonetheless, despite initially surpassing Labrador Retrievers to claim the top spot in 2022, these distinctive bat-eared bulldogs retained their position in the latest rankings, which encompass newly registered puppies and dogs within the nation’s oldest dog registry.
Gina DiNardo, the executive secretary at the AKC, noted, “The French Bulldog‘s surge in popularity shows no signs of slowing down.” However, she emphasized the importance of conducting thorough research to find the right breed that aligns with one’s lifestyle and ensuring acquisition from reputable breeders.
In addition to French Bulldogs, other breeds are also experiencing shifts in popularity. Dachshunds have reached nearly a two-decade peak, while the cane corso is gaining traction. Furthermore, a new entrant, the bracco Italiano, debuted in the rankings.
Despite the prominence of purebred dogs, it’s essential to acknowledge the broader canine population in the U.S., where animal shelters faced an influx of various dog breeds last year.
Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 breeds: Following French Bulldogs, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Poodles ranked among the most commonly registered breeds. Dachshunds, Bulldogs, Beagles, Rottweilers, and German Shorthaired Pointers rounded out the top 10, maintaining their positions from the previous year. Notably, Yorkshire Terriers and Boxers, which were part of the top 10 a decade ago, have been replaced, reflecting evolving preferences among dog owners.
While purebred registrations offer insights into popular breeds, they represent only a portion of the canine population. The AKC rankings encompass approximately 200 recognized breeds and exclude hybrids and mixed-breed dogs. However, these dogs can still participate in various activities, such as agility and obedience, under the category of “all-American dogs.”
Despite the popularity of purebred dogs, animal shelters continue to play a crucial role in rehoming dogs of all breeds. Stephanie Filer, executive director of Shelter Animals Count, emphasizes the importance of adoption and encourages the community to prioritize shelter animals. While recognizing the appeal of specific breed characteristics, she highlights the diverse options available in shelters.
Brandi Hunter Munden, spokesperson for the AKC, acknowledges the value of rescue dogs and emphasizes the importance of finding the right fit for one’s lifestyle when considering dog ownership, whether through adoption or acquiring a purebred dog.
