Maggie, a two-year-old Dalmatian, arrived at the shelter in a distressing state, emaciated and in urgent need of medical attention. Initially found as a stray, Maggie was later surrendered by her owner, compounding the urgency of her situation.
Marcie Cornell, the executive director of the Lenawee Humane Society, described Maggie’s condition as the most severe case of emaciation she has encountered in her 12 years at the shelter. Despite her skeletal appearance, Maggie displayed remarkable resilience, steadily progressing under the care of the shelter staff.
Recovery for Maggie has been a slow and painstaking process. She faced difficulties with swallowing due to prolonged lack of nutrition, requiring emergency intervention from a specialist. A feeding tube was inserted into her esophagus, enabling her to receive nourishment every eight hours.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, it was discovered that Maggie was pregnant. Cornell, who took Maggie home to foster her, expressed shock and concern over the prospect of Maggie giving birth in such a fragile state.
Against the odds, Maggie delivered 11 puppies, though tragically, four did not survive. The surviving seven, albeit smaller than average, are thriving under the care of foster homes while Maggie continues her recovery journey.
