A distraught pet owner in Beaminster has expressed outrage at the leniency of authorities after her Chihuahua-yorkie was fatally attacked by an American bulldog, with the bulldog‘s owner receiving only a warning from the Lisburn and Castlereagh council.
Saffron Bustard recounted the harrowing incident, describing how she struggled on the ground to fend off the aggressive dog as it latched onto her pet during a walk in the Derriaghy area. Despite her screams for help, bystanders were hesitant to intervene due to the ferocity of the attack.
The council, in response to the incident, issued a warning to the owner of the American bulldog and imposed control measures. However, Bustard believes these measures are inadequate and fears for the safety of other animals and the public.
Detailing the attack, Bustard described her desperate attempts to protect her pets as the American bulldog launched its assault. Even after the attack ceased, she found herself traumatized and afraid to venture out alone with her remaining pet.
The council’s decision to issue only a warning to the bulldog’s owner has left Bustard deeply disappointed and apprehensive about future encounters. She expressed concern for the safety of her community, particularly children who frequent the area.
In a letter to Bustard, a council enforcement officer outlined the control conditions imposed on the offending dog owner, including the requirement for the dog to be leashed and muzzled in public. However, Bustard remains unconvinced that these measures are sufficient to prevent future incidents.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for swift and effective enforcement measures to ensure the safety of both animals and the public.
